You know what, Hotel Freihof surprised me – and I mean that in the best way possible. When I first pulled up to Freihofstraße in Stammheim, honestly I wasn’t expecting much from this corner of Stuttgart. It’s not exactly the postcard-perfect city center most tourists flock to, but that’s actually part of its charm. The hotel sits in this quiet residential area where you’ll hear church bells in the morning instead of traffic, and there’s something refreshingly authentic about staying where actual Stuttgarters live their daily lives.

The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense German architecture – nothing fancy, but you can tell it’s been well-maintained over the years. Check-in was smooth (the desk staff actually remembered my name the next day, which doesn’t happen often), and my room was exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star place. Clean, comfortable bed that didn’t creak when I rolled over, decent-sized bathroom with proper water pressure – you know, the basics done right. The Wi-Fi worked fine for video calls, though the walls are a bit thin so you might hear your neighbors if they’re having a particularly animated phone conversation. Nothing deal-breaking, just… German efficiency meets older building realities.

What I really appreciated was how genuinely local this whole area feels. There’s a proper bakery just down the street where I grabbed incredible pretzels every morning, and the S-Bahn connection into central Stuttgart is actually pretty convenient once you figure out the timing – about 20 minutes to the main station. Parking was free and easy, which honestly saved me a fortune compared to what I would’ve paid in the city center. The breakfast spread was hearty and German in all the right ways (proper bread, local cold cuts, decent coffee), though don’t expect anything too elaborate. It’s the kind of place where business travelers and families passing through seem to mix comfortably, creating this relaxed atmosphere where nobody’s trying too hard to impress anyone. For the price point and that 7.6 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises – a comfortable base for exploring Stuttgart without the tourist markup or pretensions you’ll find closer to the Schlossplatz.

  The hotel is located in a quiet residential area. It is 26 minutes away from the Schlossplatz via UBahn. Our room was big enough for us. Bed was comfortable. Staff is accommodating and helpful to all our questions.

  What could be improved: The hotel is in the centre of Reading which is obviously good however parking is quite a walk away which is a pain if you are unfamiliar with the area.
