Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of ibis hotels across Europe, and honestly? The ibis Stuttgart Centrum surprised me in ways I wasn’t expecting. Walking up to the building on Marienplatz, you might think “typical chain hotel” – and you’d be partially right – but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about this place that just works.

The location is actually pretty clever. You’re right in Stuttgart-Süd, which I mean, isn’t the most glamorous district name, but you’re literally a five-minute walk from the main pedestrian zone and maybe ten minutes to the Hauptbahnhof if you walk at a decent pace. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night despite being so central – the double-glazed windows actually do their job, which isn’t always a given with 3-star places. The staff at check-in spoke perfect English (thank god, because my German is embarrassing), and there’s this no-nonsense efficiency that Germans do so well. You know what you’re getting, and they deliver exactly that.

The rooms are classic ibis – compact but intelligently designed, with that slightly industrial aesthetic that either works for you or it doesn’t. I’m in the “it works” camp, honestly. The bed was firm in that European way, the shower had proper water pressure, and there’s decent WiFi throughout. You’re not getting a minibar or fancy toiletries, but the basics are solid. One thing that caught me off guard was how well-maintained everything felt – I’ve been in newer hotels that somehow felt more worn down. The breakfast buffet is typical continental fare, nothing revolutionary, but the coffee was surprisingly good and they had actual butter, not just those weird margarine packets.

Here’s the thing about this hotel – it’s earning that 7.7 rating by being exactly what it promises to be, no more, no less. If you’re the type who needs a rooftop bar and marble bathrooms, look elsewhere. But if you want a clean, comfortable base for exploring Stuttgart without paying premium prices, this place delivers. The neighborhood has some great local restaurants within walking distance (there’s a fantastic Swabian place called Gasthaus zum Hirsch just around the corner that locals actually go to), and you can easily walk to the Mercedes-Benz Museum or catch the U-Bahn to other parts of the city. It’s not going to be the highlight of your trip, but it won’t be a source of stress either – and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
