You know what? I was honestly a bit skeptical when I first walked up to Motel One Stuttgart-Mitte on Lautenschlagerstraße. I mean, the word “motel” had me expecting something pretty basic, but this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s got this sleek, almost minimalist vibe that feels way more sophisticated than your typical roadside stop – think clean lines, dark woods, and that sort of understated German design aesthetic that just works.

The location is what really sold me though. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Stuttgart’s main train station, which sounds like it might be noisy, but honestly the street noise isn’t too bad once you’re inside. What’s brilliant is that you can stumble out the front door and hit Königstraße (the main shopping drag) in about three minutes, or wander over to the Staatsgalerie if you’re into art. I actually ended up spending way more time than planned just exploring the Mitte district – there are these great little cafés tucked into side streets that you’d never find if you were staying out in some business hotel by the airport. The front desk staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood too, not just the tourist spots. One guy told me about this bakery on Eberhardstraße that opens at 6 AM and makes these incredible pretzels that are still warm when the commuter crowd hits.

Here’s the thing about the rooms – they’re compact but really well thought out. Everything has a place, and there’s actually decent storage space, which is rare in European city hotels. The beds are firm (in a good way), and I slept better than I expected considering I was right in the city center. The shower pressure was solid, and they’ve got this rain shower head that makes you feel a bit fancy. My only minor gripe is that the walls are a bit thin – I could hear my neighbor’s TV, but it wasn’t terrible. The WiFi worked perfectly, which matters when you’re trying to figure out Stuttgart’s public transport system or book museum tickets. Oh, and there’s this communal area downstairs with really comfortable seating where you can grab a decent coffee and just watch the city wake up through these big windows. It’s the kind of place where you might actually want to hang out for a bit instead of just crashing for the night. For a 3-star place with an 8.4 rating, it definitely punches above its weight – especially if you value being right in the thick of things rather than having a huge room you’ll barely use anyway.
