Hotel Description

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Astoria am Urachplatz, you get this immediate sense that you’ve found something genuinely local rather than another cookie-cutter chain property. The building sits quietly on Rotenbergstraße in Stuttgart-Ost, and honestly, that’s part of its charm — it’s not trying to scream for attention. This three-star place has that understated German efficiency thing down pat, where everything just works without making a big fuss about it. The location offers an authentic slice of Stuttgart life without the typical tourist trappings.

The Neighborhood Feel

Stuttgart-Ost is one of those districts that locals actually live in, you know? You’re not stuck in some tourist bubble here. The Urachplatz area has this nice residential vibe with tree-lined streets, and I mean, you can actually walk to proper cafes and shops that aren’t just selling overpriced souvenirs. It’s about a 15-minute tram ride to the city center, which sounds like a lot until you realize how peaceful it is to come back to after a day of sightseeing in busy Stuttgart. The neighborhood truly captures the essence of a working residential community.

Your Room and Comfort

The rooms here aren’t going to win any design awards, but they’re exactly what you need after a long day — clean, quiet, and surprisingly spacious for a mid-range property. Each room has this no-nonsense German approach where everything has its place and actually functions properly. The beds are firm (which took me a night to get used to, honestly), and the bathrooms are compact but well-designed. What really struck me was how many guests seemed to be returning visitors — there’s something to be said for a place that keeps people coming back. The attention to practical comfort is evident throughout.

Morning Fuel

The breakfast situation here is actually pretty solid. They do both continental and buffet options, and while it’s not fancy, it’s substantial enough to get you going for the day. Fresh bread, local cold cuts, decent coffee — you know what I mean, the kind of breakfast that feels authentically German rather than some international hotel interpretation of it. The restaurant area gets good morning light, which makes starting your day feel less rushed somehow. The quality and presentation reflect genuine care for the guest experience.

Why Guests Love It

Here’s the thing about Hotel Astoria am Urachplatz — it’s become this sort of quiet favorite, especially for couples who want to experience Stuttgart without all the downtown hotel chaos. The fact that they have parking right at the property is huge if you’re driving (and honestly, finding parking in German cities can be a nightmare). The staff seems to genuinely remember repeat guests, which creates this welcoming atmosphere that’s hard to fake. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and in a world of over-designed, Instagram-ready hotels, there’s something refreshing about a place that just focuses on doing the basics really well. This hotel represents a refreshing alternative to mainstream hospitality.

Early hotels booking in Stuttgart requires advance planning during peak exhibition seasons when visitors flock to see the city’s cutting-edge automotive innovations and cultural performances.

  • Almost perfect for an economical one night stopover when travelling by train. – Olivia from United Kingdom – July 26, 2024 (8/10)

Room had all facilities I needed for a one night stopover, all clean and in good order. And quiet through the night.
I was a few minutes late for the (rather late) checkin time I had advised, and they phoned to check if I was still coming (i.e. did not just lock the door leaving me outside). Good buffet breakfast (and checkout) available from early until quite late (06:00 to 11:00) so should suit all itineraries.

What could be improved: Construction works at Main Railway Station, which they say have been in progress for years. Make it difficult to find the way out and Google Maps does not know about the latest footpath closures. So it was quite difficult to find the start of route to the hotel as it was getting dark meaning it took (me) about one hour instead of the expected 25 minutes to do the walk – which is uphill although not really too steep. It would have been good to know how to use Bus No. 42 which passed me frequently. Returning to the station in daylight was much easier, as it is all downhill and I found a signposted footpath to Hauptbahnhof that bypasses all the roadworks and construction in station, with steps designed for pushchairs/buggies that almost fit suitcase wheels. Note that the only access to main railway station is at one side, via a very long step-free spiral walkway.

  • Very Good – Paul from United States – July 3, 2024 (8/10)

    Easy access

What could be improved: No coffee maker or fridge.
