You know what caught me off guard about the Hetzel Hotel? It’s tucked away in Wangen – which honestly, most visitors to Stuttgart have never heard of – but that’s actually its biggest strength. I mean, you’re getting legitimate 4-star quality without the downtown Stuttgart chaos, and the Ulmer Strasse location is way more practical than you’d think at first glance.

The building itself has this solid, unpretentious vibe that screams “we know what we’re doing” rather than trying to wow you with flashy design. Check-in was refreshingly smooth (none of that awkward hovering while they fumble with the system), and the staff genuinely seemed to know the area – like, they suggested this little bakery three blocks down that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms hit that sweet spot of being properly comfortable without feeling sterile. Good soundproofing too, which matters more than people realize, especially since you’re on a fairly busy street. I actually slept better here than at some of the pricier places I’ve stayed in Stuttgart’s city center.

What really sold me on this place is how it works as a base for exploring. You’re technically in a residential area, so you get a feel for how actual Stuttgart residents live, but the public transport connections are solid – honestly better than some central locations where you’re fighting tourist crowds just to get on the U-Bahn. There’s decent parking if you’re driving (not a given in this city), and you can walk to some surprisingly good restaurants that locals frequent. The hotel restaurant itself is… well, it’s fine, nothing revolutionary, but they do a proper German breakfast and the coffee doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around for hours.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t where you stay if you want to stumble back to your hotel after a night in Stuttgart’s party district. You’re looking at a short transit ride or taxi, which some people love and others find annoying. But if you’re here for business meetings around the Mercedes-Benz area, or you’re using Stuttgart as a jumping-off point for the broader region, the location actually makes perfect sense. Plus, that 8.4 rating isn’t inflated marketing nonsense – it reflects exactly what you get: solid, reliable, comfortable accommodation that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
